The Wisdom of Others
Concerning The Moon

"The moon is essentially gray, no color. It looks like plaster of Paris, like dirty beach sand with lots of footprints in it."

~~ James A. Lovell (1968)

"There is something haunting in the light of the moon; it has all the dispassionateness of a disembodied soul, and something of its inconceivable mystery."

~~ Joseph Conrad (1900)

"Luna-tic"

Victim of gravitational pull.
Consigned to concentric orbit.
Appreciated only come twilight
and abandoned at dawn;
forsaken and rejected.

Casualty of cyclic phases.
Viewed periodically as whole.
Blamed for random derangement
and the rearrangement of tides;
feared and vilified.

Mistress of the poet.
Warbled over in song.
Immortalized in metered verse
and lauded for luminosity;
praised and sanctified.

Curiosity of the learned.
Wondered at for years.
Found possessed of little gravity
and criticized for lack of atmosphere;
maligned and misunderstood.

Target of the conqueror.
Brayed at by the beast.
Coveted as a destination
and trod upon by a man or two;
exploited and expended.

I am the moon.
