Biography:
Sally Banfill's acrylic paintings depict strange, uniquely American landscapes. Stark and surreal scenes have been archaeologically stripped of clutter to reveal some odd artifact such as a coin-operated elephant or the bygone gas station shaped like a cowboy hat and boots. These lonely tableaus have an air of mystery and a touch of the ominous. Banfill is from Olalla, Washington. She has lived in Seattle for the last eleven years, and has recently moved to Bremerton. She studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and received a BFA from the University of Hawaii in 1984. Much of her inspiration comes from the 20th century American Regionalist painters; from the lonely, isolated scenes of Edward Hopper to the whimsical and twisted world of Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood.
